Activity List:
Snorkeling:
Each island has it's special beaches that can transport you to a wonderful world of colorful fish, shellfish, turtles and corals. Almost everyone in Hawai'i knows a beach that is special and will share the information. Dive shops are great sources of information on snorkeling beaches. Many of their clients often begin by snorkeling and graduate to SCUBA diving.
SCUBA Diving:
SCUBA diving in Hawai'i is wonderful, especially if you are visiting from a climate with 50 degree water and 8 foot visibility. The Hawaiian waters average about 78 degrees and the visibility can reach 170 feet in some areas. The waters are filled with colorful fish, turtles, eel, corals and lava formations. Many areas have wrecks that have been sunk to provide artificial reefs for the fish and a playground for SCUBA divers. Check with the dive shops to find a spot that fits your needs and experience.
Surfing:
There are many types of surfing available in Hawaiian waters: Body surfing, Windsurfing, Big board surfing, Boogie board surfing. Almost every island has a set of beaches that provide surfing of one type or another. Surf shops can provide you with information, rentals and/or lessons to fit your requirements. Waikiki beach vendors offer big board surf lessons right there with photographers to capture your achievements. Many of the islands have sheltered lagoons that provide an easy way to learn windsurfing.
Sailing:
Sailing in Hawaiian waters can range from a thrilling experience to a romantic one. Some of the offshore winds and waves can be a challenge for the best of the sailors. All of the bigger islands offer dinner cruises. Many of the dinner cruises come complete with live entertainment. Snorkeling sailing adventures usually come complete with lunch or breakfast. Some snorkeling sailing cruises offer SNUBA dives (shallow water diving with an air line to the surface). Sailboats in all sizes are available for rent on almost every island.
Kayaking:
Kayaking on the ocean can be an exciting thrill of a lifetime. Kayaks come in several sizes and varieties and, almost every island offers kayak rentals, guided tours and/or lessons. Many islands offer kayak expeditions from one to several days. Kaua'i offers guided kayak trips up their main river to a fern grotto.
Skydiving:
Skydiving in Hawai'i is simply beautiful. The shimmering blue waters and coral reefs contrast with the white sands for a breath taking experience. Tandem skydives are available on O'ahu from several companies for those who don't have the desire to jump alone and are the fastest way to experience freefall, usually from 10,000 feet.
Waterskiing:
Waterskiing Hawai'i is warm and wonderful. Many islands offer rental boats and equipment or have companies which provide the service by the hour. Almost any kind of water conditions can be found by contacting a local marina.
Jetskiing:
Jetskiing in Hawaiian waters is restricted when the Humpback whales are around in the winter months. This is to prevent the possible stress to the babies that are born when the whales come to Hawai'i. However, when the whales are gone, the skiing is wonderful. Almost every island has rentals available.
Parasailing:
Parasail companies are available on all the major islands. The wind and water conditions can vary from day to day and from early morning to evening. Check with the parasailing companies to assure that you will get the ride you are after. Many of the boats have been designed especially for Hawaiian parasailing. Some companies offer boats that launch and retrieve you right from the front of the boat without getting wet or touching land.
Soaring:
The constant tradewinds create wonderful soaring conditions in the islands. O'ahu has some of the best soaring rides available. Check in any of the free advertisement booklets available and call for more information on price and packages.
Fishing:
Fishing in Hawaiian waters can be as easy as sitting on a rock or the sand and trying your luck on reef fish or it can be a trial of endurance with the big marlin on a charter. Every island has charters available and the local sporting goods shops all offer rods, reels, tips and bait for beach fishing.
Submarine Rides:
O'ahu, Maui, and the Big Island all offer submarine rides. There are two kinds available. One does not actually submerge but provides underwater windows and/or ports to view the reef fish, turtles, coral gardens and divers feeding the reef fish. The other type actually submerges and descends to underwater wrecks or deep coral reefs where you can see many of the interesting sea life of deeper waters. O'ahu offers a ride just off Waikiki Beach in 90 feet of water where you can see SCUBA divers exploring a sunken ship.
This is only a short list!
These are only a few of the many wonderful activities that await you when you visit Hawai'i. Additional information on activities related to beaches, golf courses, hiking, snorkeling and SCUBA is located on each Island Menu. We hope that this section has provided you with a few good ideas of things to do and include when planning your trip.

Molokai Ranch
The Cove
Come join our experienced guides for an unexpected Hawaiian adventure. Over 1,000 Asian and African animals roam free on the Moloka'i Ranch Wildlife Park, and they love to have you visit! Our 14 passenger, air conditioned safari van is an ideal vantage point from which to view and photograph the animals.
The tour guide makes frequent stops for picture taking and identifies the animals at each sighting. A highlight of the tour is the unique "giraffe picnic" where you join the friendly giraffes at a fenced compound within the park and hand feed them if you wish. Meet our rare animals up close and personal, and even pose for pictures with them.
The Nature Conservancy has provided information on several preserves and birds found in them for your enjoyment.
Hikes through the preserves are scheduled on the second Sunday of each month. Reservations for hikes should be made by phoning (808) 572-7849.
The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i establishes and manages preserves throughout Hawai'i. Our goal is to protect the finest remaining examples of native plants, animals, and natural communities in the Hawaiian Islands. We are private and nonprofit, and are funded entirely by membership dues, donations, foundation grants, and corporate gifts. We welcome your interest and invite you to join our efforts.
Waikamoi Preserve is a 5,230 acre protected area which is a sanctuary for hundreds of species endemic to Hawai'i. This is a subalpine region where native plants, birds and insects live. Haleakala Ranch Company granted a conservation easement to the Nature Conservancy in 1983 and they have worked in partnership since then to protect this treasure. Rare birds such as the 'i'iwi, 'apapane, 'amakihi, pueo (Hawaiian owl) and the nene (Hawaiian goose) live in this forest.
Reservations can be made for hikes into the Preserve either by calling (808) 572-7849 or contacting the National Park Service at (808) 572-9306
Over time, much of Hawai'i's coastline has been altered by development. The Nature Conservancy established 921 acre Mo'omomi Preserve on the northwest coast of Moloka'i in 1988, thus protecting the most intact and diverse beach and sand dune area in the main Hawaiian islands. Native plants especially adapted to this windswept environment cover the dunes. Guided hikes are available, or you may explore on your own.
This area is also an important nesting site for the endangered green sea turtle. Although no permit is required, parts of the preserve are extremely fragile and visitors are asked to use only the designated trail areas and to avoid the sand dunes.
Hawai'i's 'apapane brightens up the forest on several of the Hawaiian islands.
This colorful bird is found on most of the main Hawaiian islands, including the 11,000 acre upper portion of Kipahulu Valley, the first project of The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i. This area is now part of Haleakala National Park. The Conservancy has helped to protect over 47,000 acres state wide.
